If you’ve been following along, you know that my dog Charlie had fleas several weeks ago. It really wasn’t bad, and we managed to get them all out of the house really quickly. Of course, you have to do a systematic clean to get rid of them, because fleas will die, but their eggs may live through any treatment you may have done and you’ll have a “second round” of the little bastards to worry about. In my attempt to avoid having a surprise bloom of fleas, I followed the instructions on a bottle of household flea spray to the letter. It worked. So why was Charlie still all red on her belly and back legs… and why wouldn’t she stop scratching?
I took her to the vet, because I knew the bugs AND their eggs were gone, yet she seemed even more miserable than before! The vet said that she had contact dermatitis, probably due to “something she’s laying on, like your carpet or her dog bed”… all of which I sprayed with this damn flea-killing spray.
You know me by now, I didn’t WANT to use that toxic spray in my home!! The bottle assured me that as long as the stuff was DRY, it wouldn’t harm pets or people. To me, that doesn’t matter… I’ve still got dry poison in my home! I should never have used it, but I wanted to get rid of the fleas ASAP instead of letting my dog be miserable while I spent a few days figuring out what remedy to use.
Long story still long, we had a new problem to deal with in the house now. My poor doggers is being irritated by this crap I stupidly sprayed on every inch of my carpet… I KNEW I wasn’t going to dunk my dog in toxins, and I ALSO knew that it’s VERY easy to correct skin issues (in people and in animals) naturally. So I ran to Petco after we left the vet.
We bought earthbath. (they don’t capitalize the name of the product ANYWHERE, so I won’t either). They are a company VERY dedicated to making sure that you aren’t using dangerous substances around your family and pets- it actually won’t even hurt your lawn if you bath your pet outdoors with a hose. earthbath is 100% free of parabens, perfumes, phosphates and synthetic dyes. The first ingredient is purified water, and ALL the ingredients are 100% natural and biodegradable.
Awesome. I hate using products that I feel bad even washing down the drain!! Since Charlie was having a skin irritation issue (she wasn’t dirty), I chose a bottle of earthbath made with tea tree oil and aloe vera. We all know what wonders aloe vera can do to relieve skin problems… but lesser known is the power of tea tree oil. One of these days, I’ll post a nice big article about the amazing benefits of tea tree oil… for now, you’ll just have to trust me about how amazing it is, and how many different applications there are for it!
Because bathing a dog too much can dry out their skin (which I know would make Charlie even MORE miserable), I decided not to lather the dog up with the shampoo. She’s already had a lot of baths lately (fleas drown in water) and I am ashamed to say… many (not all) of those baths were with flea shampoo- chemicals. Yuck.

Charlie has been soaking in the bath tub with lukewarm water. I put earthbath in the water and make her sit in there for at least 10 minutes. I realize that 10 minutes is a long time for people who have dogs that don’t want to be in the water… but if you can sit there with them and keep them calm, the soak will do wonders. I’m lucky because Charlie won’t GET OUT of the tub!
Anyway, you’ve got to try the stuff. It comes with a two thumbs/two paws up rating from us! Immediately after Charlie’s first soak in earthbath, we noticed that she quit scratching. In fact, I don’t think she’s scratched in a few days now. It smells WONDERFUL, and you know it’s good for your pet, and good for the planet! You can get earthbath products MUCH CHEAPER on amazon.com than you can at a store like Petco. I wish I’d known that before I NEEDED some. Now that YOU know you can get it cheaper, buy some now so that you get it on time for your pet’s next bath.
earthbath is good for any pet, not just dogs. They make a complete line of products like shampoos, eye wipes, ear wipes, hypo-allergenic grooming wipes, and deodorizing sprays. They have lots of different scents and different combos for pets with dry skin vs pets with normal skin, etc. I don’t think Charlie and I will be changing doggie shampoo anytime soon!
